Report #985 from lg3

Then-Current Conditions : 12F / -11C, Clear - 2:53 PM CDT Mar. 12

Tubes and swimmers.  Tubes and swimmers.  You've probably heard everyone talking (and talking and talking) about em for just about any species of fish.  Alright, I'll give it a try.

1.  For tubes, here's my favorite.  New for 09, the Mister Mino can be fished as a tube or on a regular jighead.  In addition to the versatility, I like the natural, real-life look (you thought there was a real minnow on your screen, didnt you?)  as well as the "slow fall" benefit of all tubes.

2. As for soft swimmers, I like the Mister Twister Sassy Shad standby.  A larger profile not only allows for a weedless rigging, but also can make quite a commotion underwater.  One thing I found last year is that you may want to go to a bigger hook - maybe a 1/0 or 2/0 - to give it firmer "vertical body" to swim better.  (I'll do another post on hooks and jigheads)

3. And speaking of standby's, I got my eXude curly tail grubs as well.  When I mention "jig n' plastic" throughout the year, this is what I'm using.  I don't think anything beats this setup for getting finicky fish out of brushpiles when the cranks aren't workin and you can't "dance" the live bait well enough.  This technique (and this plastic) was responsible for  35 walleyes in one hour last year, as well as some bigger fish.

Everything I've ordered is in either natural, silver colors or white - although I must say I thought about the bullhead coloring pictured above.

So that's plastic. Ain't it fantastic?

p.s. If you're shoppin, Mister Twister has a 20% off sale right now on select products (including some real ugly critters).

It's nice to see some jig'n plastic discussion here. I was surprised you didn't switch that night we fished last year. That bullhead color up there would be good on the Chip

Up until about the last 5 years, I caught about 90% of my walleye casting 1/8th and 1/16th ounce Mr. Twisters with the 2" and 4" tail. They are a very versatile lure and will catch every type of fish. I've caught everything from musky to quill back buffalo on Mr. Twisters.

Hey DWW, quill back buffalo??? Sounds like a lotta bull! haha Good read on the plastics lar. Plastics are very versatile I've used them casting like cranks, jigging them and even trolled them in da U.P. They work in cold water and warm, from spring to summer thru the fall. For the larger fish, I like the sassy shads, and for the panfish, I prefer the twister tails.

Hey, the QBB is a prized fish in China.

I'm prujudiced toward BPS Tripple Ripple; had a similar "Jun 11Th" experience a few years ago in MN Bay looking for Crappies & hit Walleyes in the West corner like you dream about. 25 plus in less than an hour on a purple 3-R in 4-6 FOW, looked like rain & took the Mrs. back after supper...they were gone. I personally think the weather has more to do with the intense bite than the bait.

What....no BANJO Minnow? I used a BANJO Minnow on my rocket rod last year and the northerns loved it. Caught a few asian puffer carp too!
