Report #1260 from Cincy

Then-Current Conditions : 51F / 11C, Clear - 5:53 AM CDT Jul. 28

A late report from last week.

We had a large group staying up on the north end of the east side.  Fishing was pretty slow as others reported.  We only managed to track down 1 walleye and a mixed bag of smallmouth, bluegill, crappie, and northern.  One nice smallmouth at 18".  We mainly fished the upper east side.

The highlight of the trip was my 16 year old son's first muskie - 37".  Using a Cold Front toad type rig, I made a cast and had an imediate hit.  I set the hook hard and thought I had one hooked up for a few seconds until the resistance was gone.  I got the toad to the boat and found both legs had been amputated by a toothy critter.  While I was changing toads, my sons third cast to the area enticed the fish to hit again.  Fish On! - Let the fun begin.  After a three runs under the boat and a couple to deeper water we got  her in the boat for a few pics.  Fish was caught on the south end of Moss Creek on a top water bait.

Thanks to all for the great post's

Cincy

Awesome! That fish looks to have been caught about 100 feet from where I had the first one blast the toad. I spend a lot of time in Moss Creek, lost a big fish there when the Spro leader I was using pulled through the crimp...been trying to catch her ever since. I never use any factory made leaders anymore either.

A "Cold Front Toad"....I like the sounds of that.
lg3 at 10:06 AM - July 28, 2009
I'll be much happier with that name when the story changes from fish on to fish boated. I also have a toad with no legs.
Cold Front at 10:49 AM - July 28, 2009
I was really hoping to for a "Toad Smashing" when I was running it on top. I found a pretty heavy duty 8/0 swimbait hook with a 1/4oz. belly weight that allowed me to slide the body down a little to expose the barb and it was still weedless. Seemed to run better with the weight than when I tried without the weight.
Cincy at 11:19 AM - July 28, 2009
Cincy.. What baits were you using, the ones I'm using are way to big for an 8/0 hook and the other brands I've found are too small. I'd like find one that comes in at that 5-7 inch range rather than the ones that are 9 inch plus.

CF, Can't get to my box right now but I think the were the following: The Propwash Toad is the big brother to the other Sizmic Toads, at 5.5" long. It weighs more, so it casts much farther than the other toads. It has oversized feet and longer legs for more propwash action.

Moss Creek?? Oh you mean Weed Central. Nice post.
DK at 1:06 PM - July 29, 2009
DK...I've had action from thirtenn different fish in "weed central" and we've boated three. I really don't mind if you don't fish there, but if you'd like to catch one you might wan't to figure out a way to fish those weedy bays.

While we enjoy excellent fishing today, 90% of the juvenile walleye population has disappeared in recent years. Help keep the Chippewa Flowage healthy.
